September is National Kinship Care Month. The Child Welfare League of America defines kinship care as the full-time protecting and nurturing of children by grandparents, aunts, uncles, godparents, older siblings, non-related extended family members, and anyone to whom children and parents ascribe a family relationship. When parents are unavailable kin are essential to a child’s healthy development. In South Florida so many amazing people fill this role, formally and informally, that it is virtually impossible to accurately count them. It is certain, however, that they are a blessing to our community’s children and deserve the entire community’s constant gratitude.
