Since 1981 October has been designated National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic violence affects millions, people of all races, religions and socioeconomic status. It also dramatically affects and sometimes destroys families. In South Florida exposure to domestic violence trails only adult substance abuse as the reason that children are removed from their homes and enter foster care, despite South Florida partnerships among BSO, DCF, ChildNet and domestic violence service providers dedicated to keeping families together. Their work has been magnificent, but even more is required to ensure that fragile children are never even exposed to such violence amongst their parents.
